What is Risk Factor?

RPR has partnered with Risk Factor™ – a free tool created by the nonprofit First Street Foundation® to make it easy to understand risks from a changing environment. Risk Factor™ assesses a property’s risk from floods, wildfires, hurricane wind, extreme heat, and air pollutants.

Understanding Risks

Risk Factor™ assesses a property’s risk from floods, wildfires, hurricane wind, and extreme heat and presents the results in property-specific scores that range from 1 (lowest risk) to 10 (highest risk).

Estimated costs to rebuild or repair, annual A/C energy consumption and emissions, anticipated depth of flooding, and other details are also displayed.

Fire Factor®

Fire Factor® uses the First Street Foundation Wildfire Model to identify wildfire risks across the United States. It is a nationwide, fire-behavior-based wildfire model that shows a specific location’s probabilistic risk of wildfire based on vegetation, topography, and likely weather. Built with First Street’s fire science partners the Pyregence Consortium, it leverages decades of peer-reviewed research and forecasts how wildfire risks will change over time due to changes in the environment.

Flood Factor®

Flood Factor® uses the First Street Foundation Flood Model (FSF-FM) – a nationwide model that allows us to determine the potential flood risk from rain, streamflow, sea level rise, tide, and storm surge for any location. The FSF-FM is a complex system comprised of various water models and qualified input components. It is built on decades of peer-reviewed research and can forecast how flood risks will change over time due to environmental changes.

Wind Factor™️

Wind Factor™ uses the First Street Foundation Wind Model to find wind risks across the United States. The model is focused on how climate change is impacting wind risk to structures within the US. Changes to hurricanes’ intensities and their distribution are forecast to be the largest impacts of climate change on wind risk. The model builds off of decades of scientific peer-reviewed research and forecasts how hurricanes and costs from resulting wind damages to structures will change over time due to changes in the environment.

Heat Factor®

Heat Factor® uses the First Street Foundation Extreme Heat Model to find heat risks across the United States. It is a first-of-its-kind, nationwide spatial temperature model that shows a specific location’s exposure to extreme heat events based on the surface temperature, topography, land cover, and humidity in the surrounding area. It builds off of decades of peer-reviewed research and forecasts how heat effects will change over time due to changes in the environment.

Air Factor™

Air Factor™ uses the First Street Air Quality Model to find wind risks across the United States. The First Street Air Quality Model is focused on how climate change is impacting air quality conditions within the US. Increases in wildfire occurrence and climatic conditions favorable for ozone formation are forecast to be the largest impacts of climate change on air quality. The model builds off of decades of scientific peer-reviewed research and forecasts how outdoor air quality and resulting indoor air quality within structures will change over time due to changes in the environment.
